(2/2/10) Florida’s Blood Centers
Supplying Blood to Haiti
Immediate Donations Needed
Florida’s Blood Centers (FBC) has been asked to send blood to
patients in Haiti and on Monday supplied the first units of blood
through the Pan American Health Organization. FBC is on standby to
send additional shipments to aid the recovery in Haiti. We are
working closely with hospitals in Florida to make sure blood is
available to meet the medical needs of their patients, including
Haitians who are being treated here.
FBC is also donating more than $24,000 to the American Red Cross
Haiti Relief Fund as a result of our $1 Per Donor campaign in
January. We are also shipping 1,000 bottles of water, along with
food collected by FBC employees to Haiti. The need for blood
donations remains high. To ensure that we have a reliable blood
supply to support any additional shipments to Haiti and to support
our community’s needs, blood donors are encouraged to donate as
soon as possible.
Blood donations help save the lives of trauma patients, premature
babies, cancer patients and people needing surgery. Every donation
benefits someone in our community. Donors should be at least 16
years old and weigh at least 102 pounds. There is no upper age
limit. |
